What is the Silhouette CAMEO®?
The Silhouette CAMEO® is an electronic cutting machine for personal use. Like a home printer, it plugs into your PC or Mac® with a simple USB cable. However, instead of printing it uses a small blade to cut paper, cardstock, vinyl, fabric and more up to 12″ wide and 10 feet long. The machine also has the ability to register and cut printed materials.

You can cut stencils on the Cameo. I’ve had mine since June and have been having so much fun experimenting with it. I do recommend you upgrade to Designer edition on the software.
I bought one 6 months ago and it’s fantastic! We cut out personalized items when we teach scrapbooking classes. Really adds to the layouts

The CAMEO does not cut fondant. You will loose all warranties on the machine should you try to cut fondant with it. Please see the notice from Silhoutte:
“Silhouette America does not officially lay claim to be able to cut this specialty material type. We do not currently have plans to create another cutting unit specifically for the purpose of cutting fondant or gum paste materials. We are aware that some users have claimed to have made modifications to use the Silhouette machine to cut such specialty materials. However, Silhouette America does not presently offer any support in this regard. We do not have special blades or mats to offer for the cutting of such materials specifically.”

You do not need to buy anything extra to start. Obviously have some cardstock or paper handy to start playing. But essentially you can start cutting as soon as you open the box.

I read through all the questions and answers, could not believe how many times you had to give the recommended price, although there were 3 other suppliers telling us about their specials with free delivery etc. I would loose it if I had to repeat myself as many time as you.

What is the maxium thickness it will cut? My husband scratch builds plastic models using plastic card and he is looking for something that will accurately cut the card so he can build straight and accurate models.

The Silhouette is designed to cut a variety of materials including vinyl, paper, specialty patterned papers, cardstock, vellum, iron-on heat transfer material, fabric (when using our Interfacing products) and sticker paper among other materials.
The Silhouette has a cutting force of 210gf and includes a blade that can extend to approximately 1 mm in depth to accommodate thicker material types. However, there is still a limitation depending on the material type’s density and make up. Certain materials that are overly dense (such as thin metals or acetate, for example) may not be able to be cut well or at all and can impair the blade. Certain materials that have abrasive natures (such as thicker chipboard or sandpaper) may also impair the blade or dull it very quickly. On the other side of the spectrum, certain fibrous materials (such as select felt materials or handmade papers) may not be held together densely enough for successful cutting.

Has anyone used a material like Mylar (3-5mil) with the Silhouette Cameo? What would you recommend for reusable stencils that are non-adhesive?
I know that the Silhouette is restricted to certain materials but searching on the net comes up with answers that yes it can be used but nothing clear on Silhouette America’s site. So am looking for those who have had experience.

Hello, Ek is van Namibia. Hier by ons is geen winkel wat dit aanhou nie. Kan ek ‘n Silhouette cameo by julle bestel met pos aflewering en het julle dalk ‘n katalogus waar ‘n mens kan kyk na verskillende kleure vinyl om te bestel, asook stensel papier ens. Ek sal al my benodighede dan altyd by julle moet bestel, aangesien ek dit nie hier sal kry nie. Sal graag eers wil kyk na die pryse van al die benodigdhede voor ek so masjien kan aankoop.
