So the other day I was browsing the aisles of a store as we scrapbookers do, aimlessly looking for things that I might be able to use in my crafting. And there in plain sight jumping up and down to catch my attention – an entire crate full of balsa wood! So off I went with two pieces and couldn’t wait to get home to start my Silhouette Curio.

I wanted to make something, anything to see if it would work – and it did. Not everything I tried work, but the debossing did and I was very excited about it. So I made a little balsa wood name plaque for my nephew’s bedroom door to start off with.

• Step 1

  Open your Silhouette software and add some wording. Select the font you want to use.



• Step 2

  I then decided to add some lines to the design just for fun. And this worked even better than just the outlined font.



• Step 3

  Select the emboss/deboss option from the menu.



• Step 4

  Select the tool 1 with the wide embossing tool loaded.



• Step 5

  Remove the spacers from the platform to only have the cutting matt. This allows you to load the balsa wood and have the correct height when debossing.



• Step 6

  Load the balsa wood into the Curio.



• Step 7

  Send the image to the machine and deboss it. Remove the balsa wood from the cutting matt to reveal the debossed word.



• Step 7

  Lightly ink across the embossed word to reveal it clearly.

I was really impressed with the debossing on the wood strip, and can see myself making loads of signs/plaques for various occasions and celebrations. So why not experiment with some interesting materials in your Silhouette Curio…just for fun!
