Are you scared? Sometimes I am afraid of the things crafters do. I am scared about the fact that when my toaster blew up about a month ago I knew that it had potential as a craft project. Yip and that’s how it became a Halloween toaster – spooky I know!

I wanted to do something fun and not too complicated. I covered the toaster with old book paper using gel medium to get a really smooth finish as well as act as a sealant. Once the gel medium was dry I added some black ink around the edges of the toaster.

I decided to grab some of the newly released Halloween Cuttlebug Embossing Folders and transfer the images into clay to form the focal point on the front of the toaster. I haven’t played with clay in a long time and it felt really good making these cute the little ‘spooky’ tiles to use on cards, gift bags and on the toaster. I also cut two bats out of black AC Cardstock and covered them in AC WOW! Extra Fine Black Glitter and popped them on top of each other for dimension using Pop Dots.
 

 

TIP: How do I add Cuttlebug embossing folder impressions into clay?

• Work on a non-stick surface and roll the clay into a 4mm thickness
• Spray your roller with water to avoid it sticking to the clay
• Lightly mist your embossing folder with water
• Press the embossing folder into the clay and add pressure using your fingers. Make sure you cover the entire ‘image’ to get a nice deep impression. You can also use a cake roller to roll over the embossing folder but this sometimes does not give enough pressure. Do NOT place the clay inside the embossing folder and then through your Cuttlebug machine – the clay sticks like crazy and when the clay doesn’t stick the tile is too flimsy to work with
• Lift the embossing folder to reveal the impression made and dry the folder before storing it
• I added a pigment powder to my clay before baking – the pigments add that beautiful sheen and colour to an otherwise dull purple clay I used
• I use a clay that needs to be baked in the oven for 15 minutes to turn rock hard

Inside the toaster I added some handmade cards using embossing folders and simple printed spooky sentiments. I simply love how the embossing folders give the cardstock texture and adding unpretentious designs at the same time.

TIP:

• Before you emboss your cardstock with your Cuttlebug I have found the following very helpful. Cut your cardstock piece to size and add double sided tape to the back of the cardstock on all four sides. Then emboss the cardstock piece using the desired embossing folder. The double sided tape also gets embossed and gives a better bond to the base you are adhering the embossed piece to.
