The Spirit of the Olympics

Every four years the world comes to a standstill for an event that epitomizes what life should be about – strength, leadership, camaraderie and diligence to mention a few. It’s a time when nations are united by their sports, when people are proud to represent their countries and what they stand for. So too in ways are crafters – every now and again they stand together united for the very thing that they love, the beautiful products and the sense of belonging it brings. The very fact that we can sit down and create with gorgeous products is what makes life not only meaningful in many ways but also brings healing for whatever reason needed.

The Spirit of the Olympics Boot

To capture the beauty of the Olympic Games I wanted to create a functional and meaningful project. So I called in the help of the beautiful range of Petaloo flowers. With so many beautiful blooms in exquisite colours, styles and designs to choose from it was a difficult task. But in the end it all came together, just like the different nations game together in the opening and closing ceremonies, these blooms came together from different floral families to form a conglomerate of colour, texture and pattern.

Petaloo Flowers and Union Jack

My initial idea was to create a trophy to celebrate the winners – but since everyone who just attended the Games is a winner it seemed pointless. Then I came across these little wellington boots and it screamed England with all its water and rain. And so it came to be – the Wellington cup celebrating the world and its union. I filled with boot with a polystyrene ball and then added some grey soft filling. The beautiful range of Petaloo flowers were adhered to skewers and then inserted into the polystyrene ball. I added a couple of butterflies cut from a sheet of Graphic 45 patterned paper and inserted them in between the flowers. A strip of patterned paper sporting the Union Jack finishes off this simple project with loads of meaning. I think some of the guys and girls would have loved a trophy like this to grace their mantles.
