Sometimes holding onto things for no apparent reason works out in the end. I had this empty chocolate tin for ages now – just-in-case-I-wanted-to-turn-it-into-something. You know the stuff, and I am sure you know the feeling. The empty promise of one-day turning into someday.
So today was the day. I was going to turn the empty tin into a gift tin for someone special. I first painted the tin using the new Chalk paint available in South Africa, and then added some dark wax to finish it off – making it perfect for handling. The colour is not quite what I wanted but in the end it worked out fine. I then used some of the new Prima embellishments and stamps to create the top decorative part. Here’s how I did it…
Decorating your tin on the front

Step 1:
Using a smooth piece of white cardstock, spray it using to different colours of Mister Huey’s inks – I used Aqua and Powder Blue mixed together. Mist the cardstock with water to make the inks flow and mix together. Leave it to dry thoroughly.

Step 2:
Once dry, stamp the bicycle image onto the cardstock and punch into a large circle.

Step 3:
Mist some Opaque white Mister Huey’s onto a craft sheet. Stamp your rubber stamp into the ink and then stamp onto the bicycle image. The white will only leave a partial impression making for an interesting background. Leave to dry and then ink the edges of the circle with a dark brown ink.

Step 4:
Stamp the “simple things” phrase banner onto white cardstock using Versafine Onyx Black ink pad. Use so0me of the left over Mister Huey’s ink and paint the inside of the banner. Leave it to dry.

Step 5:
Decorate the front of your tin using the gathered elements, stamped pieces and flowers. First adhere the stamped circle, then the medium Topiary resin element, chipboard swirl and then add your flowers and banner using glue dots to finish it off.
Place some tissue paper inside the tin with a small gift. Make a matching gift tag using your left over pieces.

Don’t know about chalk paints & dark wax – what are the makes & where are they available?

for years i have been drooling over Chalk and Milk paint used by decorators in America. i have been painting furniture for a while and the milk and chalk paints are amazing. Someone sent me some and i fell in love, and finally this year it came to South Africa. The Chalk paint line I use is Annie Sloan. This paint was developed by Annie herself and is typical of a women developing something that works for other women. it truly is an amazing product.

1. Chalk and milk paint needs to be sealed to make it durable, water proof and good for everyday handling. Chalk paint really is chalky – so wear old clothes.
2. There are different ways of sealing the paint but the Chalk paint line comes with 2 waxes namely clear and dark. I used the dark wax on my project.
3. Chalk paint is excellent for wood, tin, metal, steel, plastic, fabric, canvas and just about anything you can think of.
4. Chalk paint does not require a primer – you simply start painting your surface. no prepping and using of the dreaded primers always required before you can start painting.
5. the wax sits inside the lines the paint forms and gives it a nice worn/shabby look.
6. the paint is made for a French, uncomplicated and well worn look – so if you are a perfectionist you may not find this appealing.
7. Chalk paint can be thinned down with water to make it spread further or used as is.
8. Chalk paint colours can be layered like i did – so that when you sand your surface the base colour will show through lightly.
Chalk paint and the wax are by no means a scrapbooking product but i have tried it on paper on a layout and all i can say is *LOVE* – it is also amazing on the new Prima resin and wood embellishments for a truly amazing finish.
