I am a sucker for buying things on sale in the home décor department of Mr Price Home. I always look at things and can see how I would simply alter something to make it work for me, or turn it into a gift for someone special.
For this project I got this gorgeous canvas on Sale for a bargain price. I loved the design but the colours were a bit loud, so I simply changed it into some wall art with a few of my scrapbooking tools and products.
Here’s how I did it in a few easy steps.
-
Step 1
Choose the design you want to use on your canvas. I selected this quote from the Silhouette store, ungrouped it and then dragged it bigger to work better on my canvas.
-
Step 2
Move the ‘chocolate’ word off of your cutting matt on your screen so that you can cut it separately. TIP: Remember that only the words inside the cutting lines (red lines) will cut.
-
Step 3
I cut my quote out of smooth AC cardstock. You can use any colour as this will be discarded afterwards.
-
Step 4
I bought a canvas on sale from Mr Price Home to use for this project.
-
Step 5
Flip your letter over and add some Tombow Mono Multi adhesive to the back. Remember less is more in this case. Leave the glue to dry until it becomes clear and tacky to the touch.
-
Step 6
Once the glue is dry, adhere the quote to your canvas front.
-
Step 7
Paint a layer of primer over the letters on the canvas. Avoid adding too much paint to the brush so that the paint does not seep underneath the lettering. Then paint the entire canvas with a layer of black chalk paint. Once the paint is dry carefully pull off the lettering immediately so that it won’t adhere to the canvas permanently. TIP: by leaving your Tombow to dry and then adhering something makes it re-positionable. Thus you can move the letters around until you are happy with the look of your quote or words.
-
Step 8
Fill in some of the lettering with a layer of Gold All-Purpose ink for a nice finishing touch. Sand the canvas once all the paint is dry to add some imperfections.
And there you have a DIY recycled wall art that has become something new using your Silhouette and some scrapbooking products! I simply love how you can create a unique home décor item with things you already own.
