DIY Home Décor Painted Wooden Board

I am such a sucker for making things for my home. I love creating different things and swapping things out every now and again to change the look. As part of my current French farm house look I created this ruler board to put up on the side of my cupboard to fill in an empty spot and to add some interest.

Using my Silhouette and scrapbooking products makes creating things for the home so easy and versatile. I no longer see my scrapbooking tools and products as just that – they open a whole new world of creativity in and around my home. Making my home as much a part of my memory keeping process, as my scrapbooks.

  • Step 1

Prepare your wooden board by painting it with a layer of cream chalk paint. Let the paint dry fully then stencil large numbers in pencil onto the board. This way you can tweak your design and change things around easily.

  • Step 2

Choose a colour to paint your numbers and lines in. I chose All-Purpose ink for its excellent properties on wood and other porous materials.

  • Step 3

Use a small paint brush and paint in the numbers. Leave them to dry really well.

  • Step 4

I used my Silhouette to cut a template out of cardstock for the lines of my ruler board. Simply draw a rectangle and then repeat the image until you have a long strip. Cut it out of cardstock for a nice firm template. TIP: Alternatively you could use the Silhouette brand chipboard for a more permanent template.

  • Step 5

Position the template on the side of your numbers and then paint the lines in. I painted some longer than others to mimic the look of a genuine ruler.

Once all the paint is dry, lightly sand the entire board to distress it and create a rugged and well-worn look on your board. I am not too worried about painting things perfectly since I am distressing it for an imperfect look.

And there you have a nice easy DIY home décor element that is so easy to make. What will you create with your Silhouette & Tsukineko inks today?
