A well composed photograph is really a matter of opinion in most cases. But as in all things there are some cases where a few general guidelines can make for better photos. For all of these examples I am using a single photograph to illustrate.<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

Rule of thirds<\/h2>\n

This is the simplest of rule of composition. This is where you will take your image and divide it into 9 equal sections. The idea is to place your most important elements in any of those intersections. For my example photo there is two examples that I can point out \u2013 the one is where the horizon is placed on one of these intersections (towards the top), as well my main subjects he kids (towards the right). To further add to the rule of thirds is to make sure that your horizon is straight, although I am known for tilting my camera just a little bit. The viewers\u2019 eyes tend to be drawn to these spots on the imaginary lines first. <\/p>\n

\"Photography<\/a><\/p>\n

In this photo I moved the camera so that my subjects were positioned in the right of my photo.<\/p>\n

\"Photography<\/a><\/p>\n

In this photo I tilted my camera so that my horizon is skew \u2013 this makes for a funky photo but not a \u2018better\u2019 looking photo.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Perspective<\/h2>\n

Photographing your subject can be very effective, but you can create visual impact by positioning yourself or the camera either to the left or the right or above or below your subject. You can kneel, lie down on the ground or stand on something to look down onto your subject. Only a slight positioning above or below your subject can improve your portrait photos dramatically.<\/p>\n

\"Photography<\/a><\/p>\n

In this photo I kneeled down onto the sand and was slightly lower than my subjects. Can you see how the photo looks different and even better than the others? I could have gotten even lower down onto my tummy (but that would have meant getting dirty \u2013 something you can\u2019t worry about when you really want the perfect shot!)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Leading lines and verticals<\/h2>\n

We understand that with the rule of thirds the eye will automatically rest at one of the intersecting lines, but it is also possible to lead the viewers\u2019 eyes towards something else. By choosing where to place lines and shapes in your photo you can control eye movement. Shape examples can include buildings, lines on roads, telephone poles, pathways, light poles etc. you want to place the lines so that your eye is drawn into the photo and not outwards. Vertical lines can have more impact than horizontal lines.<\/p>\n

Notice how the buildings in the photo lead your eye from the left inwards towards my subject in the middle\/ right of the photo.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Negative Space<\/h2>\n

Paying attention to positive and negative space in your photo will ensure a strong composition. The positive space in your photo is something like a car, people or a building. Everything else is negative space. Negative space can also help to lead your eye to the main subject.<\/p>\n

I started off my career in retail working in a paper shop importing handmade speciality papers from japan, Canada, India and America. We also imported a range of rubber stamps (PSX), along with Ranger Products, and Tsukineko to mention a few. This was all back in 2000. I moved to the wholesale part of the business and got involved in window dressing and opening a second flagship store for the company while the owners were overseas. I have travelled extensively to America visiting CHA and Frankfurt Germany to their biggest paper trade show \u201cPaperworld\u201d where I gained valuable knowledge regarding the industry. After a whirlwind love affair with the business I headed off into the sunset to fulfil my second dream by working in publishing. I started off as Technical Editor on a scrapbooking magazine and worked on several other craft publications in the company as well. But this was not enough \u2013 after a long journey I started my own scrapbooking magazine, which transformed into writing a real book book as opposed to a magazine book, and the rest is history. I am currently a best-selling author in the craft industry with my book \u201cScrap-Boek\u201d being the fourth best seller in South Africa and currently in second print. I am a freelance artist doing work for various companies such as Caxton Magazines that includes Rooi Rose and Bona Magazine to mention a few. I travel regularly to various shows teaching and presenting lectures on scrapbooking, card-making and creativity. I have been published several times in American publications such as Taken Ten Magazine, Catch Up Issue \u2013 both Somerset Publications. I was also asked to be a guest artist by Taken Ten Magazine for one of their issues in which an entire article was dedicated to my work. In December 2011, I made my television debut by presenting Christmas Crafts on 3 Talk with Noeleen. After a bit of a sabbatical with my on-line classroom website Scrapcouture, we are busy revamping it with a fresh new approach to bringing creativity and new techniques to people all over the world. Other than that I spend lots of time scrapbooking and making cards and teaching classes weekly in Gauteng as well as throughout South Africa. I started off my career in retail working in a paper shop importing handmade speciality papers from japan, Canada, India and America. We also imported a range of rubber stamps (PSX), along with Ranger Products, and Tsukineko to mention a few. This was all back in 2000. I moved to the wholesale part of the business and got involved in window dressing and opening a second flagship store for the company while the owners were overseas. I have travelled extensively to America visiting CHA and Frankfurt Germany to their biggest paper trade show \u201cPaperworld\u201d where I gained valuable knowledge regarding the industry. After a whirlwind love affair with the business I headed off into the sunset to fulfil my second dream by working in publishing. I started off as Technical Editor on a scrapbooking magazine and worked on several other craft publications in the company as well. But this was not enough \u2013 after a long journey I started my own scrapbooking magazine, which transformed into writing a real book book as opposed to a magazine book, and the rest is history. I am currently a best-selling author in the craft industry with my book \u201cScrap-Boek\u201d being the fourth best seller in South Africa and currently in second print. I am a freelance artist doing work for various companies such as Caxton Magazines that includes Rooi Rose and Bona Magazine to mention a few. I travel regularly to various shows teaching and presenting lectures on scrapbooking, card-making and creativity. I have been published several times in American publications such as Taken Ten Magazine, Catch Up Issue \u2013 both Somerset Publications. I was also asked to be a guest artist by Taken Ten Magazine for one of their issues in which an entire article was dedicated to my work. In December 2011, I made my television debut by presenting Christmas Crafts on 3 Talk with Noeleen. After a bit of a sabbatical with my on-line classroom website Scrapcouture, we are busy revamping it with a fresh new approach to bringing creativity and new techniques to people all over the world. Other than that I spend lots of time scrapbooking and making cards and teaching classes weekly in Gauteng as well as throughout South Africa. I am passionate about what I do and I have had many amazing experiences and met so many famous people throughout my creative journey.
