The first time you see that powder melt before your eyes and turn into dimension, that\u2019s the first time you fall in love &#8211; it truly is magical. Embossing is a great technique when done right, and the key to perfect embossing is perfect stamping and knowing your products. We share some key facts and valuable information regarding embossing&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Thermal Embossing<\/h2>\n<p>Thermal embossing is a wonderful medium to add dimension and texture onto anything from paper, cardstock, embellishments and chipboard to wood, metal and plastic. Thermal embossing refers to embossing done with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/Inks\" title=\"Inks\">ink<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/Embossing-Powder\" title=\"Embossing Powder\">embossing powder<\/a> and a heat gun.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/Inks\" title=\"Inks\">Embossing Ink<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>A clear ink that acts as a binding agent for embossing powder is needed when you want to do embossing. The Ink is available in different forms and types like embossing pens and pads. The clear ink pad that I like to use is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/Tsukineko\" title=\"VarsaMark\">VersaMark Ink Pad<\/a>. I use this ink pad because of its versatility &#8211; I can use the same ink pad with other products making it cost effective. In my opinion this is the best ink pad around. It can be refilled and if looked after will last for years.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"media\" ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Embossing-Copper-Frame-Detail.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Embossing-Copper-Frame-Detail.jpg\" alt=\"Embossing - Copper Frame Detail\" class=\"gallery_full\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/Embossing-Powder\" title=\"Embossing Powder\">Embossing Powder<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Embossing powder is available in a multitude of colours and granulations. Different granulations include Detail embossing powder, Embossing Tinsels, Distress Embossing Powders, Tapestry Powders, Regular Embossing Powder and Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel. Embossing powder is a fast melting powder that delivers rich colours and solid surface bonding. The powder is sprinkled onto a wet, inked surface and then heated with a direct heat source (heat gun) creating a slightly raised design. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Embossing Gun\/Heat Gun<\/h2>\n<p>A heat gun is a heat tool that directs hot air to a precise area. The forced heat melts embossing powder creating a slightly raised surface on a design. The heat gun is not a hair dryer \u2013 a hair dryer blows air where the heat gun delivers more heat. Although industrial type heat guns can be used it is not recommended. These heat guns reach higher degrees and will burn and scorch your paper even before your know it. This type of heat gun is not recommended for the untrained hand or eye of a crafter. They are dangerous. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Tip<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Always unplug your heat gun when it is not in use or when you leave the house\/your craft room \u2013 a heat gun that falls to the floor accidentally can turn on by itself and can cause fire and huge damages to property.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a rel=\"media\" ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Embossing-Copper-and-Gold-Detail.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Embossing-Copper-and-Gold-Detail.jpg\" alt=\"Embossing - Copper and Gold Detail\" class=\"gallery_full\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>UTEE Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel<\/h2>\n<p>This is a coarse grained embossing powder normally used in a melting pot for dimensional stamping and embossing. UTEE can be used to create a thick tile like accent to add dimension and texture to a project. UTEE can also be used for edges or even to stamp directly into. Build up several layers of UTEE to create a thick base for stamping into. This type of powder works well for adding texture but is not meant to be used with detailed stamps and normal embossing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Copper and Gold<\/h2>\n<p>For the beautiful clock image I used gold and copper embossing powder on a single stamped image for a striking effect.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"media\" ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Embossing-Copper-and-Gold.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Embossing-Copper-and-Gold.jpg\" alt=\"Embossing - Copper and Gold\" class=\"gallery_full\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Embossed Frame<\/h2>\n<p>For this embossed image I used copper to emboss the treasure stamped image. I stamped the image a second time and then colour it using the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/Artiste-Dual-Tip-Brush-Markers\" title=\"Artiste Dual Tip Brush Markers\">Artiste Pens<\/a> and popped the image on top of the embossed image. To frame the stamped image I used the frame from another image and embossed it in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/Embossing-Powder\" title=\"Embossing Powder\">green metallic embossing powder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"media\" ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Embossing-Copper-Frame.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Embossing-Copper-Frame.jpg\" alt=\"Embossing - Copper Frame\" class=\"gallery_full\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Multi-Coloured Embossing<\/h2>\n<p>I used three different colours of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/Embossing-Powder\" title=\"Embossing Powder\">embossing powders<\/a> to alter a chipboard element. Combining embossing powders used in this way makes for an interesting effect and can be used in a myriad of ways.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Tip<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Always make sure your paper is free from dust and oily marks because embossing powder will stick to those areas.<\/li>\n<li>Dust your area to be embossed with an \u201cAnti-Static Pad\u201d before stamping and applying embossing powder. This prevents the powder from sticking to unwanted areas.<\/li>\n<li>Did you know that you can create your own custom coloured embossing powders by mixing different colours together?<\/li>\n<li>Clear embossing ink can be used together with coloured powders OR coloured ink pads can be used with clear embossing powder.<\/li>\n<li>When embossing onto acetate make sure it is free from finger marks and dust. Do not hold your heat gun too close to the acetate as it will buckle and burn.<\/li>\n<li>Prevent over heating embossing powder by holding your heat gun about 10cm from the image to be embossed. Overheated embossing dries out and pulls right into your paper \u2013 leaving nothing but a matt coloured area. The raised surface disappears.<\/li>\n<li>Guard against under embossing images. The embossing powder will rub off your project and will make embossing useless. The secret to embossing with most embossing powders \u2013 when it turns shiny you know it is heated\/melted correctly.<\/li>\n<li>Scorching your paper with a heat gun happens quickly so keep the heat gun moving.<\/li>\n<li>Move the heat gun over the image systematically until all the powder is melted. Once the powder starts melting it causes a chain reaction and runs ahead to the next spot.<\/li>\n<li>Prevent contamination of your embossing powders. Use one powder at a time and shake off any access powder into the designated bowl. <\/li>\n<li>Always protect your surface when embossing as the heat can cause damage to craft mats and table surfaces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a rel=\"media\" ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Multicoloured-Embossing.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thewholesaler.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Multicoloured-Embossing.jpg\" alt=\"Multicoloured Embossing\" class=\"gallery_full\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I love the effect of combining different colours of embossing powders together. To create some colourful tags I used embossing in different colours on chipboard elements and plain white cardstock.<\/p>\n[custom_list type=&#8221;dot&#8221;]\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3>Step 1<\/h3>\n<p>Ink your chipboard element using VersaMark ink pad. Press the ink pad onto the chipboard, do not drag it across the surface as this will cause the sponge surface to detach.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Step 2<\/h3>\n<p>Add one colour of embossing powder onto selected areas of the chipboard element. Shake off the excess powder carefully.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Step 3<\/h3>\n<p>Add a second and third colour of embossing powder onto the remainder areas. Cover the entire piece with the last colour of embossing powder \u2013 this will cover any blank spots on the chipboard. I started off my career in retail working in a paper shop importing handmade speciality papers from japan, Canada, India and America. We also imported a range of rubber stamps (PSX), along with Ranger Products, and Tsukineko to mention a few. This was all back in 2000. I moved to the wholesale part of the business and got involved in window dressing and opening a second flagship store for the company while the owners were overseas. I have travelled extensively to America visiting CHA and Frankfurt Germany to their biggest paper trade show \u201cPaperworld\u201d where I gained valuable knowledge regarding the industry. After a whirlwind love affair with the business I headed off into the sunset to fulfil my second dream by working in publishing. I started off as Technical Editor on a scrapbooking magazine and worked on several other craft publications in the company as well. I am currently a best-selling author in the craft industry with my book \u201cScrap-Boek\u201d being the fourth best seller in South Africa and currently in second print. I am a freelance artist doing work for various companies such as Caxton Magazines that includes Rooi Rose and Bona Magazine to mention a few. I travel regularly to various shows teaching and presenting lectures on scrapbooking, card-making and creativity. I have been published several times in American publications such as Taken Ten Magazine, Catch Up Issue \u2013 both Somerset Publications. I was also asked to be a guest artist by Taken Ten Magazine for one of their issues in which an entire article was dedicated to my work. In December 2011, I made my television debut by presenting Christmas Crafts on 3 Talk with Noeleen. After a bit of a sabbatical with my on-line classroom website Scrapcouture, we are busy revamping it with a fresh new approach to bringing creativity and new techniques to people all over the world. Other than that I spend lots of time scrapbooking and making cards and teaching classes weekly in Gauteng as well as throughout South Africa.
