Easy DIY Frame – Using bubble art for a exquisitely quirky & unique look!

Some of my favourite techniques are those easy things that even kids can do. Yes the very basics of our art and craft journeys! Today’s project is one of those but incorporating (one) of my all-time favourite ink from The Wholesaler – All-Purpose-Ink.

Here’s how I created this piece of art…

The base ingredient and what really makes the magic happen with this technique is dishwashing liquid. Yip, good old I have it in the kitchen stuff.

DIY Frames - Bubble Art

  • Step 1

Gather at least 3 colours of All-purpose inks, plastic or paper straw, small bowl, dishwashing liquid.

  • DIY Frames - Step 1

  • Step 2

Pour a substantial amount of dishwashing liquid into your bowl. Add a couple of drops of ink, one colour at a time, into the dishwashing liquid. TIP: Water down your dishwashing liquid a bit to make it not so thick and sticky. This will also help with the whole bubble blowing process.

  • DIY Frames - Step 2

  • Step 3

Use your straw to blow bubbles into the liquid. Be careful not to pull some of the liquid into your mouth. Blow until there are large amounts of bubbles towering above the top of your bowl rim.

  • DIY Frames - Step 3

  • Step 4

With the towering bubbles, take your paper and gently let it rest on the bubbles. The bubbles will pop and transfer the colour onto your paper creating an interesting pattern. Repeat by blowing more bubbles in your inky liquid and popping them onto your paper until the entire sheet is covered. Use a clean bowl, new dishwashing liquid and a new ink colour – repeat until you have covered the entire sheet of paper with 3 colours of bubbles.

  • DIY Frames - Step 4

  • Step 5

Emboss a sentiment onto your paper once it is dry, add some sequin embellishments and pop into a frame for quick and easy home décor item or gift idea for an arty friend.

  • DIY Frames - Step 5

You can even get the kids involved in this project, just make sure they work outside and on an easy to clean surface. Enjoy creating your own DIY frame and most of all happy bubble-art making!

This is lovely! I already have several projects I’m excited to use this method with. Thanks for this beautiful art! But I can use some help. Just what is all-purpose ink? Would the re-inkers from Tim Holtz distress ink pads work? Would using watercolor work?
Thanks again for showing us this technique,

  • Hi Cheryl
This really is such an awesome and simple kid friendly technique with spectacular effects. All purpose ink is really that – a Washable, permanent, blendable craft ink
Can be painted, airbrushed, stenciled or used as a dye
Maintains the soft hand of fabric
    Permanent when heat-set
Available in a wide range of colors including six metallic colors
    Water-based; archival and acid free
Yes you can definitely try distress ink re-inkers! BUT try API it truly is amazing! Thank you so much for your comment!
    Love JOwilna
